“After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.”

About Colette

For fifteen years, Colette Mercer read the news from a teleprompter. Wanting something real to focus on, Mercer began sketching a neighbor’s cat that would hold still in the afternoon light. The former news anchor now lives in Austin, Texas, holds a BFA from SVA and paints in the quiet early morning hours.

Mercer’s impressionist style leans on soft beige, gray and blue, warmed by touches of orange. In our shop, the best sellers are places rather than pets: cherry blossoms framing the Washington Monument, the Château Frontenac in Quebec City, Toronto’s Casa Loma in autumn and the cliffs of the Cape Breton Highlands. Take a look at the artist’s most popular canvases below.
