About the Artwork

This monochrome landscape painting by Colette Mercer follows a narrow waterfall as it steps down a dark rock face, ledge by ledge, into a still black pool. Mist lifts off the water at the base, and fern fronds reach in from both banks like they're leaning in to listen.

Colette built the whole scene with a palette knife. The cliff is laid down in flat, chunky slabs of charcoal and pewter, while the falling water is dragged in long pale streaks that drip off every ledge. Up close you can see the ridges of paint; step back and it reads as stone, moss and spray.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves hiking trails, quiet forest corners and the sound of moving water, but wants it in a calm, restrained palette. If you've been looking for black and white landscape wall art that still has real texture and depth, this one delivers.

As black and white canvas wall art, it sits easily in a living room, a reading nook or above a bed, and works well with grey wall art, natural wood and linen. Hung as a large black and white canvas in a hallway or entry, its tall format draws the eye upward the same way the falls do.

After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.
