About the Artwork

Colette Mercer built this piece the way dry ground breaks apart. Thick black, charcoal and grey paint is pressed down with a palette knife into irregular plates, each edge ridged and raised, with thin cracks running across the surfaces. One deep fissure winds down the center, and only that channel is filled with metallic gold.

The black white and gold abstract wall art reads almost like an aerial view. Cream and pale grey sweep across the top like a distant horizon, while drips of black run down the lower right edge. The texture is heavy and visible, and the gold catches the eye first before you notice all the small breaks around it.

It suits someone who likes monochrome abstract wall art with one quiet, warm accent. If you want something sophisticated abstract wall art lovers will spend time with, without loud color, this is a calm and grounded choice in black and white canvas wall art.

Hang it in a study, entryway or above a console as modern office wall art, or use it as black and white abstract art for living room walls with brass lamps, dark wood or charcoal upholstery. Its tall shape works well in narrow spaces and between windows.

After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.
