About the Artwork

Two zebras stand side by side, facing opposite ways, each leaning its head toward the other in that quiet watchful pose zebras share in the wild. Colette Mercer built every stripe with a palette knife, so the black bands sit thick and glossy against pale, almost silver hides. Their hooves catch the light, and their legs reflect in a wet gray floor below.

The background is where the knife really shows. Layered slabs of gray and off-white peel and drip down the canvas, giving it the feel of an abstract zebra painting behind a very real pair of animals. The contrast between the loose backdrop and the careful stripes keeps your eye moving.

This piece of black and white zebra art suits anyone who loves wildlife but wants something calmer than a safari photo. It works for couples, for people who like a strong graphic pattern, and for anyone drawn to textured, hand-built paint.

Hang this canvas wall art above a sofa, in a hallway with clean white walls, or over a bed in a neutral bedroom. The monochrome palette fits easily with black frames, warm wood, or brushed metal, and the tall format fills a narrow wall well.

After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.
