About the Artwork

A golden retriever sits square to the viewer, mouth open in an easy grin, eyes bright and steady. Colette Mercer built the coat with thick palette-knife strokes in white, warm grey and charcoal, each ridge of paint catching the light like a lock of real fur. Small flakes of metallic gold leaf tuck into the chest, ears and tail, then echo in the streaked grey background and the wet reflection beneath the paws.

The palette is held back on purpose. Without the usual honey tones, the retriever reads as pure texture and character, and the gold does the quiet work of warming it up. It is a portrait of a loyal dog that feels as much about craft as it does about the animal.

Made for anyone searching for black and gold wall art with real heart, and for retriever owners who want a golden retriever painting that suits a grown-up room rather than a cartoon one. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a dog lover or a memorial for a friend who has crossed the rainbow bridge.

This canvas wall art sits naturally in a living room with charcoal or cream walls, above an entry console where the dog greets guests, or in a home office next to brass lamps and dark wood. The vertical format works well over a narrow sideboard or in a hallway that needs a focal point.

After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.
