About Mateo

The family beehives taught Mateo Callahan patience and how light moves through morning fog. After leaving an MFA program in 2018, Callahan spent two years watching colors shift in the markets of Guadalajara, Mexico, before feeling ready to paint. The former beekeeper still works in Guadalajara.

The style is impressionist with a strong abstract edge, often broken into geometric planes. Striped arches in coral and cream lead the eye through the tunnels of Guanajuato. Dry hillsides in ochre and teal surround Obispado Hill in Monterrey, and turquoise water stretches beyond Playa del Carmen. These are Callahan’s canvases in our shop, printed on matte canvas and ready to hang.
