About the Artwork

This tiger sits tall and looks straight at you, with its tail curled around its front paws and its chest held high. Mateo Callahan built the fur from thick, knife-dragged strokes of amber, cream and black. Flecks of turquoise run through the white of the chest and legs, so the animal seems to pick up the colors around it.

The background is loose and gestural. Streaks of hot pink and turquoise run down the canvas, with drips, scratches and a few bright hits of yellow near the edges. That rough energy sits right next to the careful detail in the face: gold eyes, a pink nose and fine white whiskers. This tiger painting pairs that close detail with plenty of loose movement.

It suits anyone who loves big cats, bold color, or art that has some texture and attitude to it. It also makes a strong gift for someone whose spirit animal is a tiger, or for a collector of expressive animal portraits.

As canvas wall art, it holds its own above a sofa, behind a desk, or at the end of a hallway where that steady gaze greets people as they walk in. The pink and turquoise work well against white or charcoal walls and alongside eclectic, colorful rooms.

My father's beehives taught me patience and the way light moves through morning fog. After dropping out of art school in 2018, I spent two years just watching how colors shift in the markets of Guadalajara before I felt ready to paint them.
