About the Artwork

One big poppy fills this canvas, its crumpled petals opening right toward you. Mateo Callahan built every petal from thick, ridged strokes of orange, cherry red and coral, with flashes of pink tucked into the folds. At the center, inky black blotches circle a green seed head ringed with tiny gold stamens. This is a textured flower painting you can almost feel with your eyes.

Below the bloom, a single bristly stem curves up beside a closed, nodding bud, and a few jagged leaves reach out at the base. Behind it all, streaks of cobalt blue and bubblegum pink run down the surface in loose, dripping bands. It reads like poppy wall art made by someone who loves color more than restraint.

It suits the person who grows wildflowers in the backyard, or wishes they did, and anyone drawn to maximalist wall art that leans bold and cheerful. If a quiet beige print would bore you, this one won't.

Hang this canvas wall art over a sofa, in an entry, or at the end of a hallway where it can greet people first. It also brings life to a bedroom or a home office that needs a burst of warmth, and it pairs well with other wildflower wall art in a colorful gallery grouping.

The markets of Guadalajara are where I keep going back. I left art school in 2018 and spent two years there just watching colors shift before I felt ready to paint them. Patience came from my father's beehives, along with a feel for how light moves through morning fog.
