About the Artwork

Mateo Callahan filled every inch of this canvas. Big rust and coral poppies open wide with mustard-gold centers, while curling sage leaves and round seed heads climb between them like an old hand-painted wallpaper. Nothing sits quietly. The whole surface hums with color.

The paint does a lot of the talking. Petals are built up in thick, ridged knife strokes, and the turquoise ground behind them is slashed, dripped and scraped back so flashes of magenta, orange and yellow peek through. It reads as a pattern from across the room and as a loose, energetic painting up close.

This is maximalist wall decor for people who like their rooms layered and full: pattern on pattern, bold color, a little cottagecore wall art charm with a modern edge. It sits easily with grandmillennial wall decor, vintage textiles and arts and crafts style wall art, and it brings real warmth to a hand painted flower canvas collection.

As large floral canvas wall art, it works beautifully as large wall art for living room walls above a sofa or console. The vertical format also makes it a strong choice of floral wall art for bedroom spaces, hung over a dresser or beside the bed where its teal and rust tones can glow.

My father's beehives taught me patience and the way light moves through morning fog. After dropping out of art school in 2018, I spent two years just watching how colors shift in the markets of Guadalajara before I felt ready to paint them.
