About the Artwork

Lie down in a sunflower field and look straight up. That's the view Travis Callahan painted here. Three tall stems rise into a coral and turquoise sky, their heads seen from behind, so the green centers sit dark while the petals catch the last light in golden rims.

Every inch is built with a palette knife. The leaves are thick slabs of paint layered over one another, streaked with olive, teal and a little violet, and the stems carry long ridges of purple and cream. Up close you can see the edges where the knife lifted. From across the room it reads as a warm, glowing piece of yellow flower canvas art.

It's for anyone who loves sunflowers but wants something less expected than a vase on a table. If you lean toward abstract sunflower wall art, the loose, sweeping sky gives you that energy while the flowers stay easy to recognize. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a gardener or someone who misses summer evenings.

Hang this canvas wall art in a living room, a sunny entryway or above a reading chair where the upward view can draw the eye. It sits well with warm woods, rattan, terracotta and plenty of plants.

After calling games for minor league baseball in Texas, I started sketching players between innings. Those quick gesture drawings of athletes in motion became the foundation for everything I paint now.
