About the Artwork

This one catches a sunflower near the end of its season. The head hangs heavy on a curving stalk, the seed disc dark and full, and the golden petals curl and dry at their tips. Selene Maddox painted it with thick, knife-like strokes, so every petal and leaf has ridges you can almost feel.

The background is where the emotion comes in. Streaks of teal, sky blue, magenta and orange run down the canvas, and those same colors show up in the faceted leaves. It reads like abstract sunflower wall art at a distance and a detailed flower study up close, which makes this large sunflower canvas a little dramatic and a little tender at once.

It's for people who like their florals with some weight to them. If cheerful yellow blooms feel too sweet for you, this tired, bowing flower has more of a story to tell. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a gardener or anyone who loves the slow turn from summer into fall.

Hang this canvas wall art over a sofa, a dining sideboard or a bed where its tall shape can stretch out. It looks good with warm woods, deep teal or rust textiles, and eclectic rooms that mix color freely.

After years navigating the Chesapeake Bay, I traded salt air for studio light in 2016. The way morning fog rolls across water still shows up in every landscape I paint, just translated through brushstrokes instead of memory.
