About the Artwork

Five sunflowers lean out of a cobalt ceramic vase on a windowsill, with late evening light pouring through the glass behind them. Julian Mercer built this sunflowers in vase painting with thick, squared-off strokes, so the petals catch bright gold highlights and the garden outside breaks into dabs of pink, violet, and amber.

Look closely at the vase and you'll see the blue is laid down in small patches of cobalt, sky, and a touch of rust, picking up the room around it. The sill holds a warm reflection of oranges and lilacs, and the big green leaves are edged in light where the sun hits them.

This is for the person who keeps fresh flowers on the counter all summer, or who wishes they did. It brings that end-of-day glow into a room any time of year, and it reads as cheerful without being loud.

As canvas wall art, it sits nicely above a kitchen table, in a breakfast nook, or along a hallway that needs some warmth. It also pairs well with wood tones, cream walls, and blue accents in a farmhouse or traditional living room.

Working construction in downtown Boston, I'd spend lunch breaks sketching pigeons and stray cats. After years of twelve-hour shifts, I started painting those same animals at night. Now my Fenway studio overlooks the park where those first sketches began.
