“After calling games for minor league baseball in Texas, I started sketching players between innings. Those quick gesture drawings of athletes in motion became the foundation for everything I paint now.”
Travis Callahan used to call minor league baseball games in Texas. Between innings, the former sports broadcaster sketched the players, and those fast studies of bodies in motion became the base for everything Callahan paints now. The artist works in Houston, Texas, and holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado.
Pop art and abstraction collide in this work, with bold strokes, splatter and sharp geometry in blue, white, black and gray. Hockey and baseball players break into clean color blocks, and crossed bats sit over a skyline split between cool blue and sunset orange. The scenes range from Dallas to Toronto. All eight prints are below.
