About the Artwork

This puffin painting catches an Atlantic puffin in a quiet moment of self-regard. It stands on the chipped rim of an old enamel washtub, orange feet gripping the edge, and peers down at its own reflection floating in the blue water below. That striped red and orange beak and the tilted head do most of the comedy.

Annika Lindgren paints in a loose splash watercolor style. Bursts of violet and lavender spray out behind the bird, the tub drips with soft sage and olive washes, and the water is laid in with deep blues and bare white streaks of paper that read as ripples.

It suits anyone who loves seabirds, coastal trips, or a little humor at the sink. As bathroom canvas wall art, it brings color and a smile without feeling silly or loud.

Hang it above a towel bar or vanity as bathroom wall decor, or give a small space some personality as powder room wall art. The clean palette also fits easily with modern bathroom wall art and simple white tile.

I paint in a converted net shed a few blocks from Lake Superior in Duluth. Three seasons cooking on a freighter taught me to work fast with whatever was on board and to read the water's moods. I flood the paper with cold blues, let them pool and bleed, then flick berry and saffron in sudden bursts before anything dries.
