About the Artwork

This pelican had one plan, and the sink was not big enough for it. Timothy Rourke painted a white pelican tucked tight into a pedestal basin, wings folded, chest pressed to the rim, and that long peach and blue bill hanging well past the edge because there is nowhere else for it to go. The bird looks calm about it. That makes it funnier.

Rourke works in splash watercolor, so the feathers are fine, careful strokes while everything around them runs loose. Teal and navy washes drip down the pedestal, sage green spatters drift behind the faucet, and rusty streaks spill from the basin edge onto bare cream paper. I drop saturated washes onto wet paper, let them spread into the white, flick splatters across the sheet and finish with a handful of loose ink strokes.
