About the Artwork

A mother gorilla walks slowly to the left on her knuckles, head low and steady, while her infant lies stretched along her back. The little one grips her fur with both hands and peers over her shoulder, curious and completely at ease. It's a quiet, ordinary moment, and that's exactly what makes it so tender.

Sylvie Aldridge built this piece of jungle animal nursery art with a palette knife, laying the paint on thick. You can follow every ridge and swipe: teal and deep green in the mother's shaggy arms, soft lilac and peach catching the light across her back, rusty orange on both heads. The cream background is scraped in wide, cracked bands over a sage green ground, so the pair stands out clearly.

This is hand painted nursery art for parents who want something gentler than cartoon animals but still full of warmth. It makes a thoughtful gift for a baby shower, a new mom, or anyone who loves great apes and the bond between parent and child.

As nursery canvas wall art, it sits nicely above a crib, changing table, or reading chair in a safari or jungle-themed room. The muted palette also works in a playroom, hallway, or living space, and this canvas wall art can grow with your child well past the baby years.

After years creating costumes for Boston theater productions, I discovered that mixing pigments felt just like dyeing fabrics. The transition from dressing characters to painting biblical scenes happened gradually, but the storytelling instinct remained the same.
