About the Artwork

This christmas moon painting by Caleb Moretti keeps Santa small and lets the moon do the talking. A huge pale golden disc rises over a snowy hillside, and across its face a sleigh and four reindeer pass in dark silhouette, legs mid-stride. Thick, soft brushstrokes carry the powder-blue sky, lavender clouds and a faint rosy halo around the moon.

Caleb works in a soft contemporary impressionist style, so nothing is fussy. The fir trees on the left are built from a few loaded strokes of muted green, the snow is laid in with broad cream and blue passes, and a distant frozen lake sits quietly along the horizon. It reads like a hush before midnight on Christmas Eve.

It suits anyone who wants holiday wall art that feels calm rather than loud, and a Santa Claus art print that still works for the grown-ups in the house. If you collect Christmas canvas prints with a painterly hand, or simply love winter wall art with a little magic in it, this one belongs on your list.

Hang it above the sofa as Christmas wall art for living room gatherings, over a mantel, or in an entry where guests see it first. As reindeer canvas wall art, it pairs easily with whites, woods and soft blues, and the pale palette lets it stay up well past December.

A rainy Tuesday in 2015 when the library was unusually quiet, I sketched the light coming through the tall windows. That sketch sat on my desk for months before I finally bought paints to finish it properly.
