About the Artwork

This little warthog is clearly on his way somewhere. He trots to the right with his thin tail standing straight up like an antenna, snout tipped slightly down, tiny tusks just showing. Caleb Moretti painted his bristly mane and sandy coat with quick, fine strokes, so you can almost feel the stiff hair along his back.

Around him, the savanna dissolves into soft bands of blush pink, lavender and cream. The sky and ground are built from loose, layered brushwork, with a cool violet shadow under his hooves and a few tufts of grass to keep him grounded. It's a warthog piglet painting that feels gentle and a little funny at the same time.

This is hand painted nursery art for parents who want a safari theme without the usual bright cartoons. The muted pastels suit a baby's room, and the piglet's determined little march makes it a favorite with kids as they grow.

As nursery canvas wall art, it hangs beautifully above a crib, changing table or reading chair, and pairs well with the other calves and cubs in our Safari Nursery collection. It also works in a playroom or soft neutral hallway.

A rainy Tuesday in 2015 when the library was unusually quiet, I sketched the light coming through the tall windows. That sketch sat on my desk for months before I finally bought paints to finish it properly.
