About the Artwork

This christmas church painting by Craig Hollister shows a small white clapboard chapel standing alone in a snowy field on Christmas Eve. Its tall arched windows glow warm amber, the red door waits at the top of the steps, and the pointed steeple rises into a deep blue night. A few dark evergreens dusted with snow keep it company.

Craig built the whole scene with a palette knife, laying the paint on in thick, flat slabs. The sky breaks into shards of slate and navy, and the snow in the foreground catches the window light in bright golden strokes. It reads like a quiet silent night painting, with texture you can see from across the room.

It's for anyone who loves a country church at Christmas, the walk to a candlelit service, or the hush of an O Holy Night evening. Among christmas paintings on canvas, this one keeps its focus on faith and stillness rather than tinsel.

As canvas wall art, it works well above a sofa or mantel, making it easy christmas wall art for living room spaces, entryways, or a reading nook. The blues and creams sit comfortably with winter decor and stay lovely through the whole season.

People expect horses, bison and prairie birds to be painted soft, every feather in place. Mine come off the knife in thick slabs of oil, warm ochres against cool blues. I spent almost fifteen years building kitchen cabinets in the shop behind our Tulsa house, now my studio. Cabinetry made me respect a surface. A blade, not a brush.
