“My studio sits behind our house in Tulsa, in the same shop where I built kitchen cabinets for almost fifteen years. Woodworking taught me to respect a surface and to shape things with a blade instead of a brush. I paint horses, bison and prairie birds in thick slabs of oil, letting the knife carve the forms and pushing warm ochres against sharp cool blues.”
About Craig
Craig Hollister paints in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a studio behind his house that once served as his cabinet shop. For almost fifteen years he built kitchen cabinets there, and that work left its mark on everything he makes now. Woodworking taught him to respect a surface and to shape things with a blade rather than a brush, a habit of hand and eye he carried into painting after earning an Associate of Arts in Fine Arts from Tulsa Community College.
Working in oil on gessoed panel, Craig lays down thick slabs of paint with trowel-shaped knives, letting the edge carve out the muscle of a horse, the heavy shoulders of a bison or the quick lift of a prairie bird. His painterly realism sets warm ochres against sharp, cool blues, so each animal seems to stand in open Plains light. These canvases bring weight and warmth to a living room, a den with a stone fireplace, an entryway or a home office, and they sit naturally beside wood, leather and rustic textures. Below are Hollister’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
