About the Artwork

This cherry blossom oil painting catches the moment right after the branches come in from the yard and go straight into a vase. Sloane Whitaker built every petal from thick slabs of coral and pale pink laid down with a palette knife, so the flowers sit up off the surface with ridges and soft edges you can almost feel.

The vase is chunky and round, patched in turquoise, teal and cream with a thin gold rim at the lip and base. Behind it, wide strokes of lavender, peach and warm orange stack up like a wall of sun-faded paint, and the tabletop picks up the same colors in short, broken swipes. Dark, knotted branches with tiny green leaves and tight buds pull it all together.
