“Working nights at downtown hotels, I'd sketch the stray cats that gathered by the loading dock during my breaks. Those rough drawings became my first real paintings when I finally had time during the day.”
On night shifts at downtown hotels, Sloane Whitaker spent breaks sketching the stray cats that gathered by the loading dock. Those rough drawings turned into the first real paintings once daytime hours opened up. Whitaker, a former hotel concierge, is now based in Austin, Texas, and holds a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design.
Folk art is the style, with simplified shapes and bold, stylized color. Savannah oaks draped in Spanish moss, fireworks bursting over Niagara Falls, the Gastown steam clock in Vancouver and a snowy main street in Telluride are all favorites. Scroll on for the shop’s most popular Whitaker canvases, printed on matte canvas and ready to hang.
