About the Artwork

Three shaggy highlanders work their way across a rolling heather moor, heads down, each one a little farther off than the last. Raymond Kincaid built this cattle wall art with a palette knife, laying thick ridges of paint so the golden fringe and long coats look like you could run your hand through them.

The moor is a patchwork of lilac heather, dry ochre grass and flat strokes of tan, and above it the sky breaks into broad slabs of slate blue, gray and warm cream. It reads like a highland cow painting made outdoors on a windy afternoon, with the light just starting to turn at the horizon.

This piece is for anyone who loves farm animal wall art with a quiet, unhurried mood. If you have been collecting highland cow wall art, or you want something rural that still feels fresh and textured, these three grazers fit right in.

As canvas wall art, it sits well over a sofa, along a farmhouse dining wall or in an entryway where the wide sky can open up the space. The browns and purples pair easily with wood, linen and stone.

When I pick a scene, I look for forms simple enough to build in a few planes: a saguaro, a canyon, a monsoon sky over the Rincon Mountains. Servicing jet engines gave me respect for tools. So I lay thick slabs of oil with a knife, burnt orange against violet shadow, and scrape the edges clean in one pass.
