Raymond Kincaid paints the Nativity without a single figure. Just outside an open stable door, the three gifts of the wise men sit on packed earth: a small gold casket with a brass clasp, a round clay jar of frankincense, and a tall terracotta vessel of myrrh with a curved handle.

When I pick a scene, I look for forms simple enough to build in a few planes: a saguaro, a canyon, a monsoon sky over the Rincon Mountains. Servicing jet engines gave me respect for tools. So I lay thick slabs of oil with a knife, burnt orange against violet shadow, and scrape the edges clean in one pass.
