About the Artwork

Sloane Whitaker built this piece the way stone forms, in layers. Thick slabs of near-black and charcoal paint are knifed down side by side, each one leaving a slightly raised edge, until the whole surface reads as polished black marble wall art. Ivory and white veins cut diagonally across it, and inside them run fine gold threads that catch the light as you walk past.

This is an impasto abstract painting you can almost feel from across the room. The palette knife leaves ridges, cracks and soft smears of gray between the darker blocks, so the stone never looks flat or printed. It's quiet, but it has real depth.
