About the Artwork

This piece catches a swimmer mid-stroke. One arm reaches long and forward, the head is turned down into the water, and the other arm finishes back at the hip. Sloane Whitaker laid the shoulders and back in thick slabs of warm orange and ochre with a palette knife, so the body seems to rise right out of the turquoise.

The water is built the same way, in layered streaks of aqua, deep blue and white, with flicks of spray lifting off the forward hand.
