About the Artwork

A mother tiger lowers her big head and the cub pushes right up under her chin. That's the whole moment Sloane Whitaker caught here. Her amber eyes are half soft, his are turned up to her, and their whiskers cross in fine white lines between them.

Every stripe and tuft is built from juicy palette knife slabs of ochre, cream and black, laid on thick so the fur seems to ridge and catch the light. Behind them, loose patches of teal, peach, lilac and butter yellow keep the scene warm and a little dreamy instead of wild.

This big cat wall art is for anyone who loves tigers but wants tenderness over teeth. It makes a meaningful gift for a new mom, a grandmother, or the animal lover who has everything.

As canvas wall art, it feels right in a nursery, a family room, or above a reading chair in a bedroom. The pastel background plays well with soft neutrals, warm woods and bohemian textiles.

Working nights at downtown hotels, I'd sketch the stray cats that gathered by the loading dock during my breaks. Those rough drawings became my first real paintings when I finally had time during the day.
