About the Artwork

This pizza painting puts the whole pizzeria in one object. A domed brick oven sits on its hearth, the arched mouth glowing amber and rust, with Wood Fired Pizza lettered in cream across a slate gray band. A fresh sprig of basil rests on the ledge, the only bright green in the picture.

Ellis Whitmore built it with a palette knife, laying the paint in thick, flat slabs so every brick has its own edge and ridge. The cream wall behind cracks and overlaps like old plaster, and the base breaks into strokes of blue, copper and charcoal. It reads like the real thing, warm and a little rough.
