About the Artwork

Colin Mayfield built this stairway wall art one heavy ledge at a time. Burnt sienna and matte black impasto stack up the canvas like rough-cut stone, and each front edge was scraped bright with the knife, so a thin seam of cream and gold catches the light and drips down the face of the step below.

It reads as a palette knife abstract painting first and a staircase second. The paint is thick enough to cast its own small shadows, while the background stays loose and quiet: long streaks of cream, gray and rust ochre pulled straight down behind the column. The result is textured abstract wall art with real weight to it.

This vertical canvas wall art suits anyone drawn to earth tone abstract wall art that feels grounded rather than busy. If you like moody abstract wall art but want warmth instead of gloom, the terracotta abstract wall art tones here keep it from going cold.

The tall format makes this abstract staircase art a natural fit beside a real staircase, in a narrow hallway, or between two windows where a wide piece won't fit. It also anchors an entry or a reading corner with leather, wood and linen. A sturdy piece of canvas wall art that rewards a closer look.

I paint in a bright studio in Scottsdale where the desert light changes every hour. Working at a jeweler's bench taught me patience and how a small touch of gold can carry a whole piece. I sweep colour on with wide palette knives, layer translucent glazes, let drips run, and leave the subject loosely suggested inside the texture.
