About the Artwork

Colin Mayfield packed this abstract peony painting with a dense bouquet of garnet blooms, some fully open and some still tight in the bud. He built the petals up in thin glazed layers, so the deep wine red shifts into amber and rose where the light catches them. Flashes of gold leaf run along the petal edges and through the emerald leaves.

The ground is onyx black streaked with soft tan, and the paint is left to drip down the canvas below the stems in long gold and burgundy lines. That mix of careful petals and loose, running color gives the piece its textured, semi-abstract feel. It reads as dark floral wall art with a warm glow rather than a gloomy one.

This is peony wall art for someone who likes their flowers rich and a little dramatic. If you have been hunting for burgundy floral wall art that feels painted by hand rather than printed from a pattern, this one has the layered surface and metallic detail to hold a close look.

As floral wall art for living room spaces, it works beautifully over a dark sofa, a walnut console or a fireplace mantel. It also suits a dining room with low lighting, where the gold picks up candlelight. Printed as canvas wall art, this peony canvas art brings modern floral wall art energy to any room that wants depth and warmth.

I paint in a bright studio in Scottsdale where the desert light changes every hour. Working at a jeweler's bench taught me patience and how a small touch of gold can carry a whole piece. I sweep colour on with wide palette knives, layer translucent glazes, let drips run, and leave the subject loosely suggested inside the texture.
