About the Artwork

Three little espresso cups sit in a row on a polished wooden bar, each on its own saucer with a teaspoon resting alongside. The crema on top is a warm caramel swirl, and a single sugar cube waits next to the middle cup. Behind them, a wall of teal, cream and lavender breaks up the warm amber of the counter.

Travis Callahan painted this with a palette knife, laying the paint on thick so every cup, spoon and plank of wood is built from chunky, tiled strokes. You can almost feel the ridges. The cups pick up flecks of lilac, peach and gold from the room around them, so they glow instead of sitting flat.
