About the Artwork

A single straight staff rises up the canvas, and a DNA double helix winds around it from base to top until the two read as one column. Maren Hollis built both forms from thick palette-knife slabs of gold and warm sand. The edges are scraped, the rungs of the helix stand up in ridges, and you can see the paint relief catch the light.

Behind the column, broad blocks of slate blue, cream, and sand are laid down in flat, overlapping strokes that deepen to a darker blue near the bottom.
