About the Artwork

Camila Rhodes built this one with a palette knife and a lot of conviction. A tall column of black and graphite paint climbs the canvas in thick, stacked slabs, each edge catching a little ridge of light. Down the middle runs a scraped seam of cream and white, as if the dark column has cracked open to show something lighter underneath.

Around it, the background is pulled in long vertical drags of soft gray and ivory, with thin dark drips running toward the bottom. The texture is the whole point here. You can see where the knife pressed, lifted and skidded, and that raw surface keeps this monochrome abstract wall art from ever feeling flat.

This is men's office wall art for someone who likes things clear and a little rugged: a lawyer, an architect, a guy who wants his desk wall to feel serious without being cold. It reads as sophisticated abstract wall art, but it has the grit of a worked surface, not a decorator's sample.

The vertical format suits a narrow wall beside a bookcase, a spot behind a desk chair, or a hallway into a study. As black and white canvas wall art, it sits easily with dark wood, leather, steel and concrete, and it works just as well as modern office wall art in a shared workspace or as black and white wall art for office corners at home.

After eight years patrolling Lake Michigan, I needed something to balance all that structure and routine. Started with watercolors in my cramped apartment, but oil paints felt right immediately. Chicago's skyline from the water still shows up in my abstract work.
