“After eight years patrolling Lake Michigan, I needed something to balance all that structure and routine. Started with watercolors in my cramped apartment, but oil paints felt right immediately. Chicago's skyline from the water still shows up in my abstract work.”
Camila Rhodes patrolled Lake Michigan for eight years with the Coast Guard. Painting began as a counterweight to all that structure and routine, first in a cramped apartment. Rhodes holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and now works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
One skyline leads the way in a style that blends impressionism and abstraction. Chicago, as seen from the water, keeps returning: as a retro travel poster in blocks of color, as mirrored towers in steel blue and amber gold, and as a vintage transit map with flowing lines. See the Chicago canvases below, each printed on matte canvas over solid wood.
