About the Artwork

This spirit wolf painting by Selene Maddox puts a gray wolf on a dark rocky ledge, squared up and calm, looking straight back at you with amber eyes. Behind it, the sky breaks open in ribbons of teal, magenta, orange and yellow that sweep and drip down the surface like northern lights caught mid-motion.

Selene works in thick, knife-laid strokes, and you can see every one. The fur is built up in layers of silver, tan and cream, and the same aurora colors run down into the ledge below, so the wolf feels like part of the light instead of standing in front of it. Drips of paint trail through the sky and rock, giving the whole piece a loose, living energy.

It suits anyone who loves wolves, wild northern places, or bold color that still has a quiet center. The steady pose and direct gaze give it a watchful, protective feel that people tend to connect with.

As canvas wall art, it holds its own above a sofa, in a cabin den, or on a long hallway wall. Choose a larger size and it reads as a statement large wolf canvas, pulling the teal and magenta into the rest of the room.

After years navigating the Chesapeake Bay, I traded salt air for studio light in 2016. The way morning fog rolls across water still shows up in every landscape I paint, just translated through brushstrokes instead of memory.
