About the Artwork

This little black bear cub sits right down on its rump, round belly forward, front paws tucked between its legs, and looks calmly off past you. Wesley Danforth painted the fur in soft charcoal strokes with warm tan at the muzzle and chest, so the cub feels thick and touchable without any hard edges.

The rest of the canvas is kept quiet on purpose. A pale cream and dove-gray wash fills the background, the ground is laid in sandy knife-like strokes, and a few fallen leaves sit near the paws. It's a soft contemporary impressionist take on bear nursery wall art, with nothing to compete with that steady little face.

It suits parents who want pastel nursery wall art that still has some weight to it, and anyone collecting nursery animal portraits from our Woodland Nursery series. The neutral palette works for a baby's room now and a kid's room later.

Hang this nursery canvas wall art above a crib, a changing table, or a reading chair, where its calm mood can settle the room. It pairs easily with wood furniture, linen bedding, and other woodland pieces.

I paint in a weathered shed behind my house in Gloucester, a few streets up from the harbor. Working as a sternman on a lobster boat taught me to read the changing light over water at dawn. My soft impressionist canvases are built from small, loose dabs of sand, mist and faded sea blue, kept low in contrast so the painting settles quietly into a room.
