About the Artwork

This mother hippo and calf painting is all about stillness. The big mother lies flat on the warm ground, and her calf presses in close beside her, chin resting on her foreleg, eyes shut. You can almost hear the slow breathing. Wesley Danforth painted their heavy, rounded bodies in soft slate gray with a blush of pink along the bellies and ears.

The setting stays quiet on purpose. Loose, broken strokes of cream, sand, and pale blue suggest a misty riverbank and dry grass, with a faint line of trees fading into the haze. It's Soft Contemporary Impressionism, so the hippos feel solid and real while everything around them melts into gentle color.

For parents putting together a safari nursery, this is hand painted nursery art with a real sense of comfort and closeness. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a new mom, a grandparent, or anyone who loves the tender side of wild animals.

Hang this nursery canvas wall art above the crib, over a changing table, or beside a rocking chair where quiet moments happen. The neutral palette works with beige, gray, sage, or soft blue walls, and it fits just as easily in a calm living room or reading corner.

I paint in a weathered shed behind my house in Gloucester, a few streets up from the harbor. Working as a sternman on a lobster boat taught me to read the changing light over water at dawn. My soft impressionist canvases are built from small, loose dabs of sand, mist and faded sea blue, kept low in contrast so the painting settles quietly into a room.
