About the Artwork

This santa portrait painting by Ellis Whitmore keeps things close and quiet. Santa is turned three-quarters to the left, head and shoulders only, with a calm, kind look in his eyes and the faintest smile under that full mustache. No sleigh, no reindeer, just the man himself.

Every inch is built with a palette knife. The beard is stacked in thick ridges of cream with flecks of lavender, the coat and hat are cut in deep crimson with sparks of blue in the shadows, and the backdrop is a loose patchwork of pale butter, sky blue and soft violet. Up close you can see each knife stroke catching the light. It has the feel of old world santa art, but the brushwork is all fresh.

It suits anyone who wants a red christmas painting with a gentler mood than the usual cartoon Santa, and anyone who collects father christmas wall art with real paint texture. It also makes a thoughtful pick for people who like their christmas canvas prints to look like they came from a painter's studio.

As canvas wall art, it works above a mantel, in an entry hall, or as christmas wall art for living room walls where guests gather. The cream and lavender tones let it sit comfortably next to neutral decor, so it can stay up as holiday wall art from late November into the new year.

Working with hospice patients for eight years taught me about finding peace in difficult moments. I started painting biblical scenes as a way to process what I witnessed daily. The transition from caring for souls to capturing spiritual light felt natural.
