About the Artwork

This is vintage santa wall art painted the old way. Dorian Whitfield gives us a tall, quiet Santa in a long crimson hooded robe with cream fur cuffs, a sage green tunic tied with a simple cord, and a fresh evergreen sprig held close to his chest. His beard falls long and white, and his face is calm and weathered, more Saint Nicholas than cartoon.

The paint sits thick on the surface. Palette-knife strokes build the fur trim and the folds of the robe, while thin gold drips run down the canvas and gold snowflakes drift across a background that shifts from charcoal black to warm ivory. It reads as old world santa art with a textured, semi-abstract edge, and it rewards a closer look.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves traditional Christmas, collectors of christmas canvas prints, or anyone after holiday wall art that feels handmade rather than mass-produced. The muted reds, greens and creams also let it work as winter wall art that can stay up a little past the holidays.

As a red christmas painting with a quiet mood, this canvas wall art suits an entry, a reading corner, or a mantel. It also makes great christmas wall art for living room spaces with wood, linen and candlelight, and a fine piece of father christmas wall art for a family room.

A midnight fare to the Virginia Museum in 2015 left me sitting outside for two hours, just thinking. Started taking evening classes that fall while still driving days. The city's industrial textures and late-night conversations with passengers filter into every piece I make.
