About the Artwork

Lily Whitmore caught the moment a spin takes over the whole body. The dancer rises onto one toe with both arms curved overhead, and the turn itself becomes the painting: rings of teal, magenta, orange and cream coil from a pool on the floor up past her hips to her fingertips, all set against a warm golden ochre glow.

The skirt is where the paint gets loud. It flares wide in heavy, scraped strokes of cream, blue and pink, and thin drips fall from the hem as if the color is still flying off her.
