About the Artwork

This modern christmas painting follows a small alpine village as it climbs a steep, snowy hillside. The wooden chalets sit one above another, roofs heavy with snow, windows glowing a soft amber. Dark pines stand between the houses, and far behind them a range of blue peaks catches the last pale gold light of the day.

Sloane Whitaker built the whole scene with a palette knife. The snow is laid down in thick, flat blocks of cream, lavender, and periwinkle, so the slope feels like it was carved rather than brushed. The trees are stacked wedges of green and ochre, and the houses are simplified into bold shapes of brown and rust. Up close you can see every ridge of paint. From across the room it reads as a quiet winter evening.
