About the Artwork

This Live lamp painting puts you right in the hallway outside the booth. A small glass dome with the word Live in dark script sits on a black stand at the far end of a narrow corridor, lit from within, while its glow runs down the polished floor toward you.

Isla Penrose built the whole scene with a palette knife in blacks, charcoals and soft whites. The walls are thick, scraped slabs of paint, and the floor reflection is laid in broken streaks of light that feel wet and glossy. It reads like a black and white photograph, but you can see every pass of the knife.

It is for anyone who has waited in a hallway for the light to come on: musicians, podcasters, sound engineers, or the friend who still talks about their first studio session. It makes a thoughtful gift for someone setting up a home studio.

As music room wall art, it fits nicely beside a mixing desk, above a record shelf or at the end of a hallway, where the corridor perspective pulls the eye in. The monochrome palette works with dark wood, black metal and gray walls. This canvas wall art keeps things quiet and focused, just like the room it shows.

Working nights at the shipyard in 2019, I started sketching the stray cats that hung around the docks. Those rough charcoal drawings of weathered toms and shy calicos became my first real paintings when I traded my torch for brushes.

It looks amazing!

It looks amazing! The material creates the look of natural texture, even without raised detail.
