About Isla

Isla Penrose came to painting from behind a welder’s torch. Working nights at a shipyard in 2019, Penrose sketched the stray cats that hung around the docks, and those rough charcoal studies became the first real paintings. The artist holds a BA in Studio Art from Arizona State and lives in Denver, Colorado.

Watercolor and a spiritual, dreamlike mood define the style. Animals still matter, from a bear wading through prism-like blues to a bison in electric color. Cities get the same warmth: cobblestone lanes in Quebec City, rainy Rue Saint-Paul in Old Montreal and the Victorian houses of Cape May.
