This lion painting meets you head on. A male lion faces forward out of a smoky gray ground, his gaze calm and steady, his full mane falling around him in heavy sweeps. Daniela Ochoa built that mane with a palette knife, laying down thick ridges of paint that catch the light in ivory along the crown and edges, then fade into charcoal where the shadows pool.

Most of a scene stays out of my paintings, except one shape strong enough to carry the mood. Teaching calligraphy proved that a single confident stroke can do it. In my casita behind my family's house in Tucson, under a mesquite tree, I load each brush once for ink-deep blacks and slate grays. An ivory glaze softens the edges.
