About the Artwork

This lion painting meets you head on. A male lion faces forward out of a smoky gray ground, his gaze calm and steady, his full mane falling around him in heavy sweeps. Daniela Ochoa built that mane with a palette knife, laying down thick ridges of paint that catch the light in ivory along the crown and edges, then fade into charcoal where the shadows pool.

The face is handled with more restraint, fine textures around the muzzle and whiskers, soft light on the brow and chin. Below, the paint drips and runs down the canvas, which keeps the whole piece feeling loose and alive rather than polished. It reads as black and white lion wall art with real depth, all grays, creams and inky blacks.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves big cats, bold texture, or a quiet sense of strength in a room. Animal lovers, collectors of wildlife canvas wall art, and anyone after a lion head painting that feels painted rather than printed will find a lot to look at here.

Hang this canvas wall art above a sofa, in a home office, or along a hallway where the eyes can greet you as you pass. The neutral palette sits easily with leather, wood, black metal and white walls alike.

Most of a scene stays out of my paintings, except one shape strong enough to carry the mood. Teaching calligraphy proved that a single confident stroke can do it. In my casita behind my family's house in Tucson, under a mesquite tree, I load each brush once for ink-deep blacks and slate grays. An ivory glaze softens the edges.
