About the Artwork

Four dark horses run together across an open plain, manes and tails thrown back and spray kicking up around their hooves. Isla Penrose built this large black and white wall art piece with a palette knife, laying the sky down in broad, ridged slabs of silver and chalk white, then carving the horses' muscles with glossy strokes of charcoal.

Below them, the ground turns wet and reflective, with streaks of paint pulled straight down like light on water. It reads as a black and white horse painting first, but the soft sky and mirrored ground give it the calm of black and white landscape wall art too.

This is for anyone who grew up around horses, or who simply likes the feeling of movement and freedom in a room. The quiet monochrome wall art palette keeps the energy from feeling loud, so it suits people who want something with life in it that still feels restful.

Hang this canvas wall art over a sofa, a long console, or the bed, where its wide format can stretch out. As modern black and white canvas art, it sits easily with grey wall art, wood tones, leather, and linen, and a large black and white canvas like this one gives an office or entryway a strong focal point.

Working nights at the shipyard in 2019, I started sketching the stray cats that hung around the docks. Those rough charcoal drawings of weathered toms and shy calicos became my first real paintings when I traded my torch for brushes.
