About the Artwork

A luna moth hangs from a thin, knotted twig with its wings spread wide and its long tails trailing toward the bottom of the canvas. Celeste Monroe painted the wings in soft mint and pale celery green, with a plum stripe along the top edge, tiny amber eyespots and ragged cream edges that look worn by flight.

Behind the moth, the background is pure splash watercolor. Washes of slate blue, dusky rose and violet bloom outward, then run down the paper in long drips and scattered flecks. It reads like the sky right after sunset, and it turns this piece of insect wall art into something closer to abstract butterfly wall art, loose and atmospheric around a carefully drawn center.

It suits anyone who loves moths, night gardens and natural history, and anyone looking for watercolor butterfly wall art that feels a little moody instead of sweet. The pale green against the blue and blush keeps it colorful without getting loud.

Hang this canvas wall art above a reading chair, in a bedroom, or as butterfly wall art for living room walls painted in warm white or soft gray. The tall shape works well in a narrow spot by a window or at the end of a hallway.

Recording voiceovers for meditation apps taught me to appreciate silence and stillness. When I moved to Austin in 2019, I started sketching the stray cats in my neighborhood. Those simple drawings led me to painting, where I found I could capture the free-spirited energy of animals through loose, flowing watercolor techniques.
