About the Artwork

This is one of our favorite funny animal paintings from Celeste Monroe. A big gray hippo has sunk itself into a clawfoot tub, with only its sleepy eyes, little pink ears and broad nostrils sitting above the teal water. It looks completely at home, as if the tub was made for it.

Celeste painted it in her splash watercolor style. Loose washes of teal, peach, rose and violet bleed up the paper behind the hippo and drip down the sides of the cream tub, while fine ink lines keep the face, the ripples and the brass shell feet crisp. The mix of careful detail and free color is what gives it its easy charm.

It suits anyone who likes a little humor at home, hippo fans, or a family that wants bathroom wall decor with some personality. It also makes a good housewarming gift for someone who has just redone a bath.

As bathroom canvas wall art it hangs well above a tub or vanity, and its soft palette sits comfortably with modern bathroom wall art and white tile. It is just as fun as powder room wall art, where guests will catch it on the way out. Printed as canvas wall art, it brings color without any glass to fog up.

Recording voiceovers for meditation apps taught me to appreciate silence and stillness. When I moved to Austin in 2019, I started sketching the stray cats in my neighborhood. Those simple drawings led me to painting, where I found I could capture the free-spirited energy of animals through loose, flowing watercolor techniques.
