About the Artwork

This olive green rotary phone looks like it just rang. Maren Ellison painted the handset tilted up above the cradle, with the coiled cord springing loose beneath it and the cream dial sitting front and center. Thick outlines, glossy highlights and loose strokes of orange, sky blue and yellow sweep across a bubblegum pink ground.

It's a rotary phone painting with real energy. You can see the brushwork in the shadows of the cradle and the quick swipes behind the receiver, so it reads as a painting first and a nostalgia piece second. The palette keeps it bright, and the bold outlines give it that pop poster punch.

For anyone who grew up stretching a phone cord around the kitchen corner, or who simply loves funky wall art with a sense of humor. It fits right into a collection of eclectic wall art, and it makes an easy gift for a friend who collects retro canvas prints.

Hang this canvas wall art as a cheerful piece of retro kitchen wall art near the breakfast nook, in a hallway by the landline you never got rid of, or in a game room that needs a colorful canvas painting to pull the space together.

After fifteen years creating window displays for department stores, I realized I was already composing abstract scenes every day. The transition to canvas felt natural, though now my compositions exist beyond seasonal deadlines and commercial constraints.
