About the Artwork

A brown bear has settled into a clawfoot tub like a big round boulder, front paws hooked over the rim, claws and all. He isn't splashing or fussing. He just sits upright and gazes calmly off to one side, as if this is exactly where he belongs.

Emory Thatcher built this one with a palette knife, laying the fur down in chunky ridges of chestnut, amber, rust and plum. The tub is all creamy sand tones with little gold feet, and the background is broken up into slabs of sky blue and pale cream. Up close you can see every knife stroke. From across the room it reads as one warm, round, very content bear. It's a funny animal canvas art piece that gets its laugh from how serious he looks.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves bears, cabin life or a dry sense of humor, and it makes an easy gift for the person who takes long baths and doesn't apologize for it. As bathroom canvas wall art, it brings texture and color without feeling cluttered.

Hang it above the tub or beside the vanity as bathroom wall decor with some personality. It works as powder room wall art too, where guests will catch it on the way in. The blues and browns sit comfortably next to wood, white tile or brass fixtures, and this canvas wall art holds its own as modern bathroom wall art in a cleaner, simpler space.

A week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009 taught me to see water differently. The way morning light hit the lake surface became an obsession I'm still chasing in every painting.
